Railway Track Materials

In heavy railway track constructions, the superstructure has the task of absorbing the vertical and horizontal forces resulting from the traffic load and transferring them to the subsoil. In railway superstructure, two basic designs can be identified as ballasted track and ballastless (slab) track.

The track superstructure of subways, tram lines, and bridges is distinguished by certain characteristics: in subway tunnels it usually does not have a ballast layer, and the ties are laid on the concrete foundation of the tunnel. Streetcar track superstructure is influenced by the need for convenient crossing of the streetcar tracks by automobiles and for reliable bonding with the road pavement.

At BALKEEN we can supply high quality product and engineering solutions for track construction and maintenance projects as well as (Under Ballast Mat, Under Floating Slab Mat, Under Sleeper Pad, Embedded Track System, Level Crossing System, Composite Sleeper, Track Tools and Machines) to meet customer’s exact configurations and specifications:

Under Ballast Mats are used in the structure of ballast track surface in order to reduction of noise and vibrations caused by moving rail vehicles and increasing the elasticity of the ballast stone layer, thus reducing the impact of rolling stock on the ballast and improving the vertical dynamics of the track. Also to protect ballast and track maintenance costs reduction.

Under Floating Slab Mats in various thicknesses and densities are used for both underground metro and tram and light rail track projects as Mass-Spring-Systems. It can provide a high degree of ground-borne vibration isolation in specific problem areas, e.g. tunnels and tracks in close proximity to buildings.

Under sleeper pads are used for concrete bearers in ballasted track increases the track stability, protects the ballast and reduces structure borne noise and airborne noise by reducing rail damage to the running surface of the rails. Depending on the requirements such as axle loads and speeds, materials of different stiffnesses are used as under sleeper pads. For example, within a turnout, sleeper pads of different stiffness values are used in order to achieve the most uniform deflection as possible throughout the turnout.

Embedded Track System is a homogeneous continual elastic support along the full length of the rail provides optimal required support, resilience and electrical isolation for tram and light rail. Moreover, it eliminates the logistical problems and costs associated with ballast, sleepers, base plates, and fasteners, and their subsequent inspection and maintenance.

Level Crossing System is applied in all possible kinds of intersections where road meets rail. Which is rubber crossing panels provide safe and unimpeded driving and walking wherever road and rail cross. They are hard wearing with a proven reliability under all kinds of traffic load and climate conditions. the level crossing systems are available for any type of rail, sleeper, or gauge configuration, curves, maintenance depots and turnouts.

Composite Sleeper is becoming a suitable alternative for replacing the existing concrete, steel and particularly timber sleeper in both mainline and heavy haul railways. Sleepers made of polymer composite material are perfect solution for curved railway tracks and railway switches. They are also an optimal solution when it comes to placing on bridges, complex areas of the railway, as well as for use in high moist and dampness conditions in the places of operation.
