Third rail system for mass transit is a metro feeding solution as DC electrification to be installed on the side of the running rail to supply the electrical power from the substation to the rolling stock. The contact line is composed of a high-conductibility aluminum profile with a stainless steel cap clamped on top.
The third rail is kept in defined position and insulated from the ground by supports and insulator covers made by insolating materials (GRP and PVC) designed in accordance with the line voltage and the civil works constraints. also, the third rail system uses a high-conductivity steel-aluminum composite contact rail, so there is no need to lay additional feeder cables along the line; the resistance is low which can reduce the power loss of the traction network and effectively save operating costs, light weight and easy to adjust and the contact rails are connected by fishplates so there is no field welding required, so the installation is simple and fast.
